FAQ – Acupuncture in Kitsilano

Dr. Julie Nelson, TCM | Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine in Kitsilano, Vancouver

  1. What conditions does acupuncture help with?

Acupuncture can support relief from sciatica, back pain, neck pain, headaches, migraines, digestive issues, stress, anxiety, insomnia, women’s health concerns, hormonal imbalance, and fertility support.

Many of my Kitsilano patients seek acupuncture specifically for neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches and migraines.  They are seeking relief from tension caused by computer work, prolonged sitting, and stress relief.

  1. Does acupuncture hurt?

Most people feel little to no discomfort. The needles are extremely thin—about the width of a human hair. Many clients describe the sensation as a gentle “dull ache,” warmth, or tingling, followed by deep relaxation. Most patients fall asleep after the needles are in because it is so relaxing.

  1. Is acupuncture safe?

Yes. I am a Registered TCM Practitioner in British Columbia, acupuncture is a safe, evidence-informed therapy with minimal side effects.

  1. How many acupuncture sessions will I need?

This depends on your condition:

  • Acute pain: 3–6 sessions generally recommended to come 2 x a week
  • Chronic issues: 6–12 sessions
  • Stress, sleep, digestion, hormone balancing: weekly or bi-weekly for 4–6 weeks
  • Fertility acupuncture: weekly, or aligned with your cycle or IVF schedule

You’ll receive a personalized treatment plan at your first visit.

  1. How long does an acupuncture treatment take?

A typical session lasts 60 minutes.
Your first appointment includes a full TCM health assessment, pulse and tongue diagnosis, and a customized treatment plan and a Chinese formula if you require one.

  1. What should I expect during my first visit?

You’ll experience:

  • A calming, spa-like clinic environment in central Kitsilano
  • A full holistic consultation
  • Gentle needling based on your symptoms and constitution
  • Optional gua sha, cupping, and possibly red light  therapy
  • Time to relax under the table warmer with soft music
Clients often leave feeling calm, grounded, and lighter.
  1. What should I do after acupuncture?

To get the most from your treatment:

  • Drink water or herbal tea
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for a few hours
  • Rest if your body feels tired
  • Eat nourishing food
  • Avoid alcohol immediately after treatment

You may feel deeply relaxed, energized, or pleasantly “floaty”—all normal.

  1. Is acupuncture covered by insurance or extended health benefits?

Yes. Most extended health plans in BC (including Sun Life, Canada Life, Manulife, Pacific Blue Cross) cover acupuncture
I do not do direct billing. Patients submit that on their own.

  1. Do you offer ICBC acupuncture treatments in Kitsilano?

Yes. If you have an active ICBC claim, you are typically pre-approved for 12 acupuncture sessions that must be used withing 3 months of your accident. If more sessions are required after that I will submit a treatment plan to ICBC to extend your coverage.

  1. What makes your Kitsilano acupuncture clinic unique?

  • Central Kitsilano location
