Why Your Skin Needs Red Light Therapy (RLT)

I recently went for a facial and while it was amazing and my skin loved it, what they didn’t provide was Red Light Therapy. They applied beautiful masks and serums but no RLT. Which I wouldn’t have minded but the machine was stationed right beside me. A powerful stimulator of collagen, amazing for reducing inflammation and yet it was not applied to my withered face. That is a separate treatment – $90 for 30 minutes.

I provide RLT in my facial acupuncture treatments. It’s part of the package for a one hour session.  I apply it once the needles are in – it’s like a double wammy. The needles and the light both stimulate collagen production.

How Does Red Light Therapy Work?

Red light therapy (RLT) is a treatment that uses low-level wavelengths of red or near-infrared light.  RLT targets mitochondria, the energy-producing structures within cells. The red and near-infrared light wavelengths stimulate these mitochondria to produce more adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of cells. Increased ATP production enhances cellular energy availability, supporting healing and tissue repair processes. It stimulates collagen synthesis, which helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improving skin elasticity and firmness.

This is why the beauty industry loves it. It’s non-invasive yet very effective.

For best results it’s recommended you do facial acupuncture once a week for 6 weeks then come once every 6 -8 weeks for maintenance.  For just RLT 2 – 3 times a week for for 4 weeks with 20 minutes per session will stimulate collagen production. After 4 weeks you can drop down to every 6 weeks.

Unlike the facial masks, the machine I use targets larger areas like the neck and chest where there can be a lot of sun damage.
