Plantar Fasciitis Treatment with Acupuncture and Electrical Stimulation in Vancouver

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain I see in my clinic. If you spend long hours on your feet in poorly supported footwear, you may be irritating the plantar fascia — the thick band of tissue that runs from your heel bone to the balls of your feet.

The most telltale sign is sharp heel pain that is worst with your first steps in the morning. The good news is that with the right treatment, most patients experience significant relief.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

Prolonged standing on hard surfaces, unsupportive footwear, and tight calf muscles all contribute to plantar fasciitis. Many patients don’t realize that chronically tight gastrocnemius (calf) muscles restrict blood flow down the leg, increasing tension on the plantar fascia and slowing recovery.

How I Treat Plantar Fasciitis with Acupuncture

My treatment protocol combines acupuncture, electrical stimulation, massage, and red light therapy — targeting the root cause of the pain rather than just the symptoms.

Step 1 — Release the Calf Muscles
Tight calf muscles are often the primary driver of plantar fasciitis pain. I use acupuncture with electrical stimulation to release the gastrocnemius and surrounding muscles, restoring blood flow down the leg and reducing tension on the fascia.

Step 2 — Electrical Stimulation to Motor Points
I apply electrical stimulation directly to the motor points of the calf for approximately 15 minutes. This stimulates circulation, releases muscular tension, and reduces inflammation at the source.

Step 3 — Therapeutic Massage
Once the electrical stimulation is complete, I perform a thorough massage of the entire calf and foot. This helps flush out inflammation, improve tissue mobility, and accelerate healing.

Step 4 — Red Light Therapy
I finish each session with red light therapy applied to the affected area to further reduce inflammation and promote tissue repair.

Each treatment session takes approximately 45 minutes from start to finish.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

For best results I recommend one treatment per week for six consecutive weeks. Most patients notice meaningful improvement within the first two to three sessions.

Footwear Matters

Treatment alone is not enough if you return to unsupportive footwear. I strongly advise patients to:

  • Wear running shoes with proper arch support and cushioning underfoot
  • Avoid flip flops, sandals, and flat soled shoes entirely
  • Never walk barefoot on hard floors, especially first thing in the morning

The last thing a healing plantar fascia needs is repeated impact on a hard unsupported surface.

Is Acupuncture Effective for Plantar Fasciitis?

In my clinical experience, this combined protocol of acupuncture, electrical stimulation, massage, and red light therapy is highly effective for relieving plantar fasciitis pain. Patients who commit to the full six-week program and make the recommended footwear changes consistently achieve the best outcomes.

If you are suffering from heel pain and want to explore whether acupuncture is right for you, I welcome you to book a consultation.
